This opinion piece describes in haunting detail the practical, real-life ramifications of the 2022 Dobbs ruling. Even if you agree that Dobbs was decided correctly and that the right to an abortion is no longer a protected constitutional right in America such that states decide if abortion is available within their borders, you likely did not anticipate the chaos that has insued. Even if a state law says that abortions are legal if the life of the mother is at risk - the determination of if the mother's life is as risk is not an objective decision in most cases. Doctors describe the wide range of frantic scenarios that have arisen. They also explain how women (and their partners) are resorting to the internet for medical advice, medicine and legal opinions. Women are having to travel great distances at obscene costs to seek medical treatment they used to be able to get literally on the next street block. Lives are being lost. As the article questions, "Did anyone really want this?"
