This article highlights concerns with the anti-DEI movement and how it is affecting women in STEM jobs. One woman in a STEM-related position in the federal government questioned, “If we really have a society where there’s ‘equal’ participation and anybody can do anything, then where are the women in STEM?”

Women currently make up more than half of the US population but only have 1/3 of the STEM jobs and their wages are consistently and significantly lower than men’s.

One biologist said that programs focusing on recruiting diverse talent don’t give away jobs to unqualified applicants, they just give people an opportunity to compete somewhere they might not have been able to before. The biologist said that the most qualified person gets the job, no matter their race or gender. However, if the applicant pool is not diverse, then the employee pool can never be diverse. Diverse opinions are necessary in science to solve problems. Lack of diversity of thought negatively affects the nature science. Discontinuing efforts to bring women and minorities to the table will ultimately mean the success of our scientific community will be limited.
