This is a two-year residential community program in Austin for adult women who have survived sex trafficking and exploitation. Residents are offered safe shelter, comprehensive healthcare services, mental health support, private counseling, and professional development guidance. Residents learn to become financially independent as they repair their mind, body and soul. www.magdaleneaustin.org
I think it is tragic that there is even a need for this kind of program because the crime that these women have suffered is so unimaginable. I think volunteering here would be extremely challenging because of the trauma these residents have endured. Its easy to imagine the many hurdles these women have to getting back to a healthy enough mindset and a sense of security to live alone, get a job and/or support children. I'm happy to know these services are available to women but I think I'd like to see a serious effort to prevent the crimes in the first place.
